Death of President Mandela - Statement by WHO Regional Director for Africa

It is with deep sorrow that we pay tribute to the memory of a renowned global Statesman – President Nelson Mandela. The whole world was enriched by his profound courage and determination.

During his lifetime, President Mandela tirelessly worked to promote peace and to bring together people of all nations, races and creeds. He was a strong advocate for human rights and fair treatment of all.  His commitment to improving the health of people in Africa was a great source of inspiration to us.

He will long be remembered for championing the cause to ‘Kick Polio Out of Africa’ and his support for the work of the World Health Organization. In his speech at the launch of this campaign in 1996, he reminded the world that:” It was a partnership between international organisations, governments, the private sector and communities that enabled us to eradicate smallpox from the world. Let that achievement inspire us all to redouble our efforts in this campaign”.

Seventeen years on, this message still resonates today in efforts to improve people’s health.

By President Mandela’s death, the people of South Africa have lost an illustrious father of remarkable calibre and compassion and the public health community an outstanding advocate.

On behalf of the World Health Organization’s Regional Office for Africa, I convey my deepest condolences to the bereaved family and the people of South Africa.
