History of the WHO office in Mozambique

Imprimir

An agreement was signed between the World Health Organization and the Government of Mozambique in 1975. Under this agreement, WHO agreed to provide technical assistance to the Government of Mozambique particularly the Health Sector as conveyed by its mandate. This assistance ranges from support in policy-making, training, implantation of projects, etc.

Since then, the WHO office in Mozambique has changed a lot. By 1983, its staff included three international program officers based in the Ministry of Health, working with a National Program Coordinator. In 1986, Dr Manuel Boal was appointed as the first WHO Representative in Mozambique. Eleven years later, a change in the recruitment policy at global level enabled the WHO country office to hire National Program Officers.

The number of staff members has been growing steadily particularly national staff, with 19 program officers now. This expansion of the workforce required a change of premises, including an additional building - WHO Annex. The WHO country office has been operating in its current location since 2002.
