Rotavirus Surveillance

Between 2002 and 2008, a total of 74,515 cases of suspected bacterial meningitis were reported to the network. Of these, 72,111 (97%) had a lumbar puncture performed and 69,208 (96%) had CSF culture results logged in the database. Of the 4,674 positive cultures (7% of suspected cases with laboratory results in the database), 2,192 (47%) were positive for SPN, 1,575 (34%) for Hi, and 907 (19%) for NM. Additionally, 5,453 CSF specimens (8%) were purulent (turbid appearance or ≥100 white blood cells per mm) but culture results were negative.

Monitoring of surveillance sites using standardized set of indicators allows better comparison and interpretation of surveillance data at the regional level.
