The policies and strategies guiding programme planning and implementation include:
  • Promoting and supporting the development, implementation and monitoring of national medicine policies and strategies to ensure access to essential medicines with more emphasis on priority diseases including HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis, Malaria, and Childhood illnesses that encourage evidence-based selection of essential medicines, promote the use of generic medicines, and promote transparency and good governance in the pharmaceutical sector
  • Strengthening/supporting establishment of medicines regulatory systems to ensure the quality, safety and efficacy of medicines
  • Ensuring efficiency in medicine procurement, supply and distribution systems.
  • Promoting the rational use of medicines by prescribers and consumers
  • Collaborating and working with partners in pharmaceuticals including Regional Economic Communities, public health research institutions, academia and professional associations
