The objective of the programme is to support Member States to develop and implement programmes for ensuring the availability of quality and affordable essential medicines.
The functions of the programme are:
    • To promote the concept of essential medicines and provide leadership aimed at improving the availability, quality and safety, affordability and appropriate use of medicines including traditional medicines;
    • To assist Member States to formulate, update, implement and monitor national medicine policies and regulations; support national essential medicines programmes;
    • To build capacity for regulation, quality assurance, financing, management, supply and rational use of medicines, as well as operational research, through training and skills development and institutional support
    • To cooperate with relevant international, regional, and non-governmental organizations and advocate for improving the availability, quality and safety, affordability and appropriate use of medicines including traditional medicines
