Prevention of mother-to-child transmission of HIV is a critical component in the implementation of three key strategic orientations in the WHO African Region, all endorsed by Member States of the Region: The Road Map for accelerating the attainment of MDGs related to maternal and newborn health; The Child survival strategy; and The HIV prevention strategy.
PMTCT interventions are entry points for HIV-positive pregnant women and their families to access care, antiretroviral therapy and psychosocial support services. The provision of PMTCT services during antenatal, intrapartum and postnatal care provides a platform for delivering integrated MNCH services but this opportunity is generally under-utilized.
The focus of the PMTCT component of the programme is mainly capacity building at regional and national levels, support to partner initiatives for scaling up PMTCT, and development of guidance tools.
KEY MESSAGES OF MAKING PREGNANCY SAFER ARE:
- Every pregnancy should be wanted.
- All pregnant women and their infants should be able to access and receive skilled care.
- All women should be able to reach a functioning health facility to obtain appropriate care for themselves or their newborns when complications arise during pregnancy, delivery or the postpartum period.
- Safe pregnancy, childbirth and motherhood are basic human rights.
