The Integrated Disease Surveillance (IDS) Programme will provide its technical support through activities aiming at delivering Regional Expected Results, dealing respectively with Strengthening capacity in disease surveillance and the implementation of the IHR (2005).

The Integrated Disease Surveillance (IDS) Programme aims to reach the following targets:

  • Implementing coordination mechanisms for Integrated Disease Surveillance and Response in the WHO regional Office for Africa.
  • Revising IDSR technical guidelines to incorporated IHR (2005) and other priority diseases, conditions and events
  • Updating IDSR training materials
  • Enhancing IDSR publication
  • Networking of public health laboratories systems
  • Establishing/strengthening Centres of Excellences for Disease Surveillance, Public health laboratory and Food And Drug Regulation
  • Updating IHR core capacities assessment tools
  • Guiding IHR implementation plan
  • Training health staff and stakeholders in IHR including Risk communication
  • Disseminating IHR country profile and monitoring sheets
  • Establishing national and international laboratory external quality control programmes
  • Strengthening early warning system for epidemic prone diseases and health conditions of international concern
