Regional Consultation on the roles and responsibilities of WHO and civil society organizations in the prevention and control of noncommunicable diseases in the African Region

The Noncommunicable Disease Cluster (NCD) in collaboration with the Noncommunicable Disease Alliance (NCDA) will convene a Regional consultation on the roles and responsibilities of WHO and civil society organizations (CSOs) in prevention and control of noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) from 17 to 18 October 2016 in Balaclava, in Mauritius.

The Regional consultation will bring together more than 60 participants from African civil Society organizations involved in the prevention and control of NCDs in the African region. It will precede the Global Dialogue on the role of non-state actors in supporting member states in NCDs which will be held from 19-21 October 2016 at the same venue. The Global Dialogue is organized by the Global Coordinating Mechanism for NCDs (NCD GCM) at WHO/HQ in collaboration with AFRO.

The objectives of the Regional consultation are to:

  1. Share experiences, lessons learnt, and good practices on CSO involvement in NCD prevention and control and brainstorm on ways to catalyze the establishment of a Regional CSOs’ Network for the prevention and control of NCDs.
  2. Review and provide input into the draft Regional collaboration framework for the prevention and control of NCDs.
  3. Foster effective collaboration among CSOs in the Region and WHO in order to accelerate implementation of the AFRO regional NCD strategy and joint efforts to integrate NCDs into national development plans.

The Expected Outcomes of the Regional consultation are:

  1. Experiences, lessons learnt and good practices on CSO involvement in NCD prevention and control shared.
  2. Term of references and a road map for a Regional CSO Network for the prevention and control of NCDs agreed upon.
  3. An updated draft Regional implementation framework for the prevention and control of NCDs available.
  4. Collaboration and partnership among stakeholders and WHO strengthened.
