Dr Sambo to deliver Keynote Address at the 13th World Congress on Public Health, Addis Ababa

The 13th World Congress on Public Health  will take place from 23 to 27, April 2012 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, under the theme; “Towards Global Health Equity: Opportunities and Threats”. This Congress offers unique opportunities to discuss global, continental and national public health issues among the global public health community and other key stakeholders. The World Health Organization (WHO) Regional Director for Africa, Dr Luis Sambo, will deliver the Keynote address.

Ethiopia is the second African country to host this World Congress, after the one organized in Arusha, Tanzania in 1997.

WHAT? The 13th World Congress on Public Health is expected to deliberate on important and defining public health issues through evidence based and transparent interactions among the global public health community, researchers, academicians, scientists, and public health officials.

WHO? The Congress is co-organized by the Ministry of Health - Ethiopia, Ethiopian Public Health Association (EPHA) and the World Federation of Public Health Associations (WFPHA). In attendance will be the Ethiopian Minister of Health, Dr Tedros Adhanom; WHO Regional Director for Africa, Dr Luis G. Sambo; the President of World Federation of Public Health Associations, Professor Ulrich Laaser; the President of Ethiopian Public Health Association, Dr Tewabech Bishaw; heads of UN Agencies, representatives of stakeholders, public health associations and other agencies. More than 3000 participants from different disciplines are expected to participate.

WHERE? Millennium Hall, Addis Ababa

WHY? The general objectives of the Congress are to contribute towards protecting and promoting public health at global, continental, and national levels and to create a better understanding of Africa’s public health challenges within global public health.

In its all, five plenaries and more than one hundred pre-organised and free sessions on a multiplicity of public health issues will be held over a five-day period. The World Congress will provide participants an opportunity to exchange knowledge and experiences and learn from one another.
