Regional targets for 2013:

1. Maximizing access to immunization

  • At least 90% of countries will attain 90% DPT3-containing vaccine coverage at national level.
  • At least 90% of countries will attain at least 80% DPT3-containing vaccine coverage in all districts.
  • 50% of countries will have introduced pneumococcal conjugate vaccine in their national immunization programme.
  • At least 80% of countries will have conducted hepatitis B sero-epidemiology studies
  • All countries will have budget lines for EPI in their national budgets.

2. Accelerated Disease Control

2.1 Polio Eradication

  • There will be no indigenous WPV transmission in the African Region.
  • African Region will be certified as polio-free.

2.2. Accelerated Measles Control

  • Measles pre-elimination targets will have been achieved.

 

2.3. Maternal and Neonatal Tetanus Elimination

  • 90% of countries will have attained and validated MNT elimination status.
  • At least 90% of countries will attain a minimum of 80% TT2+ coverage among pregnant women in every district.

2.4 Meningococcal A meningitis elimination

  • Priority countries in the African meningitis belt will have eliminated meningococcal A meningitis as a public health problem.

2.5 Yellow Fever Control

  • 80% of countries at high risk will achieve routine yellow fever immunization coverage of at least 90% at the national level.
  • All countries will conduct emergency response vaccination within 4 weeks following laboratory confirmation of a case of yellow fever.

3. Immunisation Systems Strengthening

  • At least 90% of countries will have adopted and implemented internationally approved technologies and systems for waste management.
  • At least 80% of countries will have functional NRAs.
  • At least 60% of countries will have revised their EPI pre-service curriculum.
  • All countries will have incorporated an immunization component in their national health promotion and communication plans.
  • All countries will have functional Inter Agency Coordination Committees (ICC) or equivalent coordinating mechanisms for immunisation

4. Linking immunization to other interventions

  • At least 80% of countries will have integrated other interventions into routine immunisation and SIAs sessions for target populations.

5. Strengthening vaccine research and development activities

  • At least 50% of countries will have prioritized infectious diseases for vaccine research.
  • At least 90% of countries targeted for vaccine clinical trials will have the capacity to approve and monitor the process of trials.
