Regional targets

The regional target is a 2% annual reduction, over and above current trends in the global burden of disease due to the major chronic noncommunicable conditions, measured in disability-adjusted life years.

In order to achieve this target, the programmes is focusing on:

  • advocating increased commitment and action;
  • providing assistance for the collection, analysis and use of data on the magnitude, causes and consequences of chronic noncommunicable conditions;
  • developing technical guidance and training materials;
  • supporting the development, implementation and monitoring of policies and programmes for prevention, management and rehabilitation in respect of the conditions and disorders concerned;
  • assessing and strengthening health and other systems in order to enhance prevention and management and to provide services, including rehabilitation;
  • building and supporting networks and partnerships with governmental and nongovernmental organizations, other United Nations and international agencies, professional and consumer/family groups, the private sector and the media.
