The work of WHO in emergency response is guided by World Health Assembly Resolution WHA 58.1 of May 2005.

WHO is supporting Member States in implementing the following:

  • Assessment and monitoring (ensuring critical information) to provide the basis for decisions on assistance strategies and the allocation of resources to particular activities by the government, donors and aid agencies.
  • Coordinating health action - including the coordination of strategic approaches, technical standards and field operations.
  • Filling gaps which can occur in information and analysis or in the provision of services (these gaps may relate to service, geographic areas or population)
  • Protecting and reactivating local health systems and building resilience and capacities of institutions.
