Information Sanitaire, Bases Factuelles et Politique de Recherche (IER)

Overview

The African Health Observatory and Knowledge Management Unit supports Regional and country efforts at strengthening health systems through the African Health Observatory and a network of national health observatories.

The African Health Observatory (AHO) is an open, transparent, collaborative platform that support and facilitate the acquisition, generation, diffusion, translation and use of information, evidence and knowledge (IEK) by countries to improve national health systems and outcomes. It consists of: a web portal for easy access to the best available information; a data-statistics platform enabling data download, processing and analysis, or access to ready-made statistics; a wiki-based collaborative space for the production and updating of comprehensive and analytical country profiles based on both quantitative and qualitative information; a repository of key publications from or associated with the Observatory; the African Health Monitor a quarterly periodical; and, a platform and relevant tools that enable networking, collaborative work and learning within and between groups, communities of practice, institutions, and national health observatories.

The primary functions of the AHO are to:

• serve as one-stop-shop for information and evidence;
• monitor health situation and trends, including progress towards MDGs;
• support and facilitate forecasting of events and early warning systems;
• support the monitoring and evaluation of health system reforms and priority health programmes;
• facilitate the production and sharing of evidence for policy and decision;
• establish and maintain networks and communities of practice for the translation and application of evidence and knowledge;
• provide a platform for collaborative learning and innovation to improve and sustain human and institutional capacity for the generation, sharing and use of IEK;
• promote and support the strengthening of data sources, including vital registration;
• support the efficient and effective application of information technologies for improved health information systems; and,
• promote and support countries the development of national health observatories (NHOs) with analogous objectives and functions to that of AHO.
