Northeast Nigeria Response Borno Health Sector Bulletin # 16, 29 January 2017 In 2016, there were approximately 25,000 cases of measles among children in Nigeria, 97% of the cases were in children under the age of ten and at least a hundred children died. The phase two of the national mass measles vaccination campaign has been completed in Borno State. The campaign has ended in all 25 targeted LGAs with final data being awaited. Malnutrition screening at Kwaya Kusar LGA by health worker The measles vaccination campaign, conducted in partnership with Nigerian government, WHO and several non-governmental organizations, also included vitamin A supplement for all children under five to boost their immunity and as well deworming tablets. Under the mass measles vaccination campaign across Borno state, 2,608,090 children have been vaccinated out of target of total 3,113,620 children of age group 6 months to 10 years in 25 LGAs with 84% coverage.

IRC Health officer been assisted by a community volunteer at Goni Kachallari community where Integrated PHC services are provided On 17 November 2016 following harmonization of the data available from the following sources: EWARS, IDP camp surveillance data from SPHCDA, Health sector partners and IDSR, it was concluded that there is an ongoing measles outbreak in Borno State.

WHO’s mobile team conducting measles vaccination at Custom House camp WHO has delivered one Interagency Emergency Health Kit (IEHK) to Premiere Urgence Internationale (INGO) who will start their activities at the Primary Health Centre in Bolori II (estimated catchment population is 108,915, including IDPs). This donated kit contains essential medicines and medical supplies to treat 10,000 people for three months and also includes malaria module. So far nine IEHKs and one diarrheal disease kits have been distributed.

Midwife doing routine malaria Rapid Diagnostic Test (RDT) screening to a pregnant woman as an Ante-Natal Care service in Garba Buzu IDP Camp Suspected Measles cases continue to spur across IDPs camps spite ongoing routine immunization activities. As part of a phase I measles campaign, Borno State Ministry of Health and partners conducted reactive measles vaccination in three camps: Muna Garage, Custom House and Fariya informal camp. The total vaccinated children aged 6 months to 15 years was 13,537 with vaccination coverage of 98.2%.
