African Advisory Committee on Health Research and Development meets for its 25th session in Brazzaville

Brazzaville,  15  November 2011 -- The Advisory Committee on Health Research and Development (AACHD) meets for its 25th session from 17 to 19 November in Brazzaville, Congo.

A multidisciplinary and multisectorl body  of experts set up in 1979, the Committee has the consultative mandate to help the WHO Regional Office for Africa  contribute to WHO’s  second core function of “shaping the research agenda an stimulating the generation, translation and dissemination of valuable knowledge”.

AACHD’s principal brief is to advise the WHO Regional Director for Africa on matters of research related to health development policies and  strategies.

The three-day meeting will, among others, review progress made  and plans for effective implementation of the Algiers Declaration on Research for Health in Africa and the Ouagadougou Declaration on Primary Health Care and Health Systems.  Both Declarations were adopted in 2008.

The meeting will also review   commitments of the Region within the context of  the WHO Strategy for Health Research and establish plans for continuous interaction between the secretariat and AACHD members.

AACHD is made up of between 15 and 20 experts   drawn from academia, the medical profession, government bodies and regional health networks, professional associations, WHO Collaborating Centres and regulatory authorities.
