Brazzaville 26 May 2010 -- The World Health Organization Tobacco Free Initiative (WHO/TFI) is calling for Expressions of Interest from reputed and well-established institutions/organizations/consortia to serve as a resource centre for implementing the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (WHO FCTC) in the African Region.
According to an announcement by WHO, the Centre will be supported with US$3.5 million to be provided through WHO by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation over a five-year period.
The overall objectives of the Resource Centre will be to build regional tobacco control capacity and provide technical assistance to African governments and other entities active in tobacco control in Africa.
Once identified, the centre will be the first of its kind so designated in the Region to support Member States in the implementation of the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control. The treaty, the first negotiated under the auspices of the WHO, came into force on 27 February 2005.
