WHO/AFRO Regional Director to attend Health Ministers Conference in Cape Verde

Brazzaville, 16 March 2009 -- The WHO Regional Director for Africa Dr Luis Gomes Sambo will be in Praia, Cape Verde to attend the meeting of African Ministers of Health of Small Island Developing States from 18 – 20 March 2009.

Delegates from Cape Verde, Comores, Seychelles, Sao Tome & Principe, Mauritius and other United Nations agencies will participate in the meeting.

The three-day meeting is aimed at reviewing progress made by each Small Island State on the implementation of the Seychelles Declaration and to chart a new way forward to improve the health of populations in Small Island States in the region..

Delegates will also discuss the:

  • Diseases burden and Health systems response and challenges
  • Emergency preparedness and response
  • Non-communicable diseases and Primary Health Care

There will country specific presentations, debates and plenary sessions and it is expected that participating States will identify areas of collaboration.

Dr Sambo will also visit selected health facilities in Praia, Cape Verde.
