Objectives and Outcomes:

The major objective of the 2008 Algiers Ministerial Conference is to bring ministers from the African Region together with researchers, NGOs, donors and the private sector in order to strengthen commitments and to agree on a common declaration and action plan (The Algiers Action Plan) which will also be submitted to the 2008 Global Ministerial Forum on Research for Health in Bamako, Mali. More specifically, the Algiers conference will strive to:

• renew commitments to strengthen the generation of knowledge and narrow the knowledge gap to improve Africa’s health development and health equity;
• highlight innovative approaches and success stories in developing capacity in research, information and knowledge management in the African Region;
• strengthen the use of evidence in policy development and decision-making.

The following are the proposed outcomes:

• agreement of a ministerial communiqué (the Algiers Action Plan) which would renew commitments to research for health to improve Africa’s health;
• coherence and coordination at regional and national levels between the many different stakeholders in research and innovation for health.
