The objective of  the Gender and Women's Health  Programme is to support Member States in the attainment of the highest possible level of health for women throughout their lifespan in line with  Millenium Development Goal(MDG) targets.

The functions of the programme are:

  • To support Member States to develop and implement appropriate policies, strategies and operational plans for women with the objective of reaching every woman effective interventions
  • To encourage the recognition of the rights of women when formulating national policies and programmes
  • To support Member States to monitor and evaluate implementation of national scaling up plans for gender and women's health
  • To advocate for increased resources for gender and women's health at country level, and improve coordination of implementation
  • To support Member States to address the health and development needs of women in extremely difficult situations (e.g. street children, orphans, conflict situations, affected by HIV/AIDS)
  • To support Member States to conduct operations research and using results to develop, implement and evaluate policies, programmes and services to improve gender and women's health.
