The policy of  the Gender, Women's Health and Ageing Programme is to support Member States to develop, implement and evaluate Gender and Women's Health including ageing programs that will lead to improved quality of life for Women through out their life span in the African Region through support to policy and strategy development and implementation and incorporating a gender perspective into health policies and programmes; capacity building and technical support; monitoring & evaluation; advocacy, partnerships and resource mobilization.

The GWH Programme adopts a holistic approach to women's health, promote equity in health through women's access to quality health services, in particular, emergency obstetrics, empower women to participate in, benefit from and play a leadership role in health, through the education of the girl child in particular and advocate for the implementation of internationally agreed conventions and declarations in countries and incorporate a gender perspective into health policies and programmes.
