The IDSR policy and strategy envisage strengthening the overall national system for the surveillance of communicable diseases of public health importance particularly at district level to ensure a continuous and timely provision and utilization of information for decision making and public health action.

The adoption of the IHR (2005) by all WHO member States, regulations that Countries of the WHO African Region have decided to implement using the framework of Integrated Disease Surveillance (resolution AF/RC48/RC2) is the policy sustaining IDS action.

IDS will support Member States in putting in place and strengthening their surveillance core capacities at all levels of the health system, so that from each of these levels data are collected, information generated, shared and used for disease prevention and control
