Mission

The mission of the Epidemic Alert and Verification (EAV) Sub-Unit is to contribute to the development and maintenance of regional capacity to detect, verify and rapidly assess public health risks and to support Member States to develop national integrated early warning and epidemic preparedness and response systems that will be the foundation of the AFRO alert and response system for epidemics and other public health emergencies.

Key Functions

  • To monitor epidemiological information from all sources in order to detect epidemic and pandemic-prone diseases and other public health events of international concern and to share this information with Member States and relevant WHO programmes.
  • To support Member States to verify suspected public health events of international concern, including cases or clusters of epidemic and pandemic-prone diseases.
  • To contribute to the establishment of early warning systems in Member States to detect epidemic- and pandemic-prone diseases and other public health events of international concern.
  • To support Member States to implement risk assessments for epidemic- and pandemic-prone diseases in order to identify high risk populations and/or geographic areas that should be targeted for appropriate interventions.
  • To support Member States to monitor epidemics and other public health events.
  • Provide support to WHO/GOARN field teams and participate in field investigations and outbreak response operations, as required.
