Objectives and Expected Outcomes

The general objective of the meeting is to develop a common position on NCDs including Mental Health, violence and injuries in the African Region for the Moscow meeting on healthy lifestyles and the control of NCDs, and the UN High-Level Summit on the prevention and control of NCDs.

The specific objectives are to:

  • Update participants on the magnitude of NCDs and associated risk factors and their socio-economic impact at the regional level.
  • Raise awareness on the issues of NCDs including Mental Health, Violence and Injuries.
  • Profile the successes and lessons learned over the 10 years in NCDs prevention and control in the Region including the political and policy relevance of addressing NCDs.
  • Identify the challenges, opportunities and synergistic areas for integrating the prevention and control of NCDs in the development agenda at regional and nationel levels and in the implementation of The Action Plan of the Global Strategy for the Prevention and Control of NCDs.
  • Agree on a regional position and on desired outcomes to the Moscow meeting and the UN High-Level Summit.

The expected outcomes of the meeting are

  • An updated NCD situation analysis in the African region shared with participants.
  • Participants are aware on issues related to NCDs including Mental Health,Violence and Injuries
  • NCD prevention and control policies and interventions in the WHO African Region including successes and lessons learnt presented and discussed.
  • Challenges, opportunities and synergistic areas for attention and actions at regional, sub regional and country level discussed
  • Desired outcomes from both the Moscow meeting and the UN High Level Summit on NCDs and an agreed upon regional common position.
