Ministerial Segment of the Meeting
The one session envisaged during the Ministerial segment will be on the contributions of countries in the WHO African Region to the development of the African common position preparatory to the September 2011 UN High-Level Summit on the prevention and control of NCDs. Three panels are envisaged.
Panel 1: will focus on Areas for attention and synergistic actions
Discussions will be on
- Possible new NCDs policy areas
- The UN General Assembly High-Level Summit - national NCD policies effectiveness; civil society support
- Intersectoral collaboration to address NCDs (Ministries of Planning, Agriculture, Food Security, Social Affairs, Education, Industry, Justice, Transport and Finance)
Panel 2: will focus on the role the private sector can play.
Discussions will be on
- Dialogues among core business constituents across industries, NGOs and academias
- The enlightened self- interest of tax payers in donor countries
- Actions to strengthen collaboration and partnership and resource mobilization for NCDs prevention and control.
Panel 3: will focus on: Desired outcomes of the UN High-Level Summit
Discussions will be on:
- Possible outcomes with a particular focus on the developmental challenges faced by African countries
- The UN High-Level Summit on NCDs - active policies on NCDs and their risk factors; sustainable institutional capacity to tackle NCDs and their risk factors.
