The vision, mission, functions and ways of working of the Unit are aligned with AFRO's Strategic Orientations, the six core functions of WHO's 11th General Programme of Work 2006-2015 and with WHO's Medium-term Strategic Plan 2008-2013.

The Unit works along the following WHO strategic directions:

  • Assessing Regional and country health situation and trends, including health systems performance, and progress towards the MDGs and other agreed-upon international and Regional goals.
  • Articulating norms and standards and provision of technical support to countries to improve their capabilities for acquisition, generation and use of information, evidence and knowledge, as well as the management of these assets.
  • Improving knowledge access and use: to identify country needs and constraints to access and use of exisiting global and local health information, evidence and knowledge , develop tools and platforms to overcome these constraints.
