The TFI
meeting held in Abuja in December 2002 recommended that WHO/AFRO should make
every effort in order to improve vaccine management in the Region as Member
States are progressively introducing in their routine immunization programs
new and under-utilized vaccines. More

The mission of the IDS is to contribute to the
improvement of epidemic preparedness and response and to the control of
communicable diseases in the African Region. More

Management of Childhood Illness
Globally about 11 million children under five years of age die
annually of common preventable diseases such as acute respiratory
infections, diarrhoea, malaria, measles, and malnutrition. Many of these
deaths occur in countries in sub-Saharan Africa. More
Leprosy
The mission of the Regional Programme for the
Elimination of Leprosy is to provide all Member States, especially those for
which leprosy is still a major public health problem, with technical,
managerial and financial support, required to reduce the prevalence rate of
the disease to less than one case per 10,000 population at national level. More
Measles
Measles causes approximately 500,000 deaths in Sub-Saharan Africa each
year. The Sub-Saharan region accounts for 50% of all global measles
deaths. More
Neonatal
Tetanus (NNT)
Despite an
estimated 400,000 infant deaths due to neonatal tetanus in the
African region, limited support in the past 10 years has focused on
neonatal tetanus. More

Mission: Collaborate
with countries and partners that new and under utilized vaccines are
introduced and effectively used to reduce mortality and morbidity in AFRO
member countries. More
Polio
Eradication
Provide
technical assistance and guidance to countries in the African Region
to ensure that by the year 2002, there will be no cases of acute
flaccid paralysis associated with wild polio virus in the region,
and that the African Region is certified as being polio free by the
year 205. More
Vaccine
Preventable Diseases
During the next five years the Regional Program will concentrate on
strengthening immunization systems, accelerating disease control, and
introducing new vaccines and relevant technologies, and tools. More
